The summer semester 2027 in Germany runs from April to September, so a Master’s starting then needs admission, APS and a visa within about six months of today. That can still work for some Indian graduates, but uni-assist says many courses start only in the winter semester, and the APS certificate may now wait on a dMAT test in mid-January. This guide helps you decide in October and November 2026 whether to aim for April 2027 or for winter 2027.
Does your programme even start in summer?
Check this first. uni-assist states that many courses start only in the winter semester, not in the summer semester. Open each programme page on your shortlist and confirm that it admits for summer 2027. If none of your choices does, the question is settled: plan for winter and use our Winter Semester 2027 timeline.
For each programme that does start in summer, write down three things: the deadline, whether you apply through uni-assist or directly, and whether the university wants a VPD (a uni-assist certificate on your documents that you then send to the university yourself).
There is no single summer deadline
uni-assist does not give one date for everyone. It says each university sets its own application periods and deadlines, that deadlines can depend on your country of origin, and that Master’s deadlines are often earlier than Bachelor’s deadlines. The university’s deadline also applies when you apply through uni-assist. Take every date from the programme page, not from a list or an older article.
APS and the dMAT: the step that sets the pace
uni-assist lists the APS certificate as a required document for applicants with Indian university studies, uploaded as the unchanged, digitally sealed file. German Missions in India say applicants with Indian degrees almost always need an APS certificate to be admitted to a German university.
APS India says verification takes at least two weeks and can take longer, depending on application volume and on how fast schools, boards and universities respond. It does not give a fixed processing time.
The dMAT adds a step for some applicants. On 15 October 2026, APS India stated:
- The dMAT is required for summer semester 2027 Master’s applications and later intakes, for applicants in the affected fields.
- You are exempt if you completed APS online registration or shipped complete APS documents before 29 June 2026, or already hold your APS certificate.
- The next test dates will be in mid-January and mid-March. The registration start date had not been announced.
- An updated list of affected fields will be published on the dMAT page.
- You can send your APS documents before you have the dMAT certificate, but APS India can only issue the APS certificate after the dMAT certificate has been submitted and checked.
For the first round, the test was on 26 September 2026 and certificates were available on 12 October 2026. Our dMAT news post covers that round; check the APS India dMAT page for the newer dates.
Is April 2027 still realistic for you?
Put the chain in order and compare it with each deadline:
- APS documents sent and verified (at least two weeks).
- If the dMAT applies to you: the mid-January test, then the certificate, then the APS certificate.
- Your application, ideally at least eight weeks before the deadline if you use uni-assist.
- The uni-assist result, usually within 4 to 6 weeks of your online application. On 12 October 2026, uni-assist listed 2 to 3 weeks for certificates from Asia, and longer in individual cases.
- The university’s decision.
- The visa, which DAAD India says can take around two months.
If you are exempt from the dMAT, or your degree is outside the affected fields, and your programmes’ deadlines leave room for this chain, summer 2027 can still be worth trying. If you need the January dMAT and the programme deadline comes before you could hold the APS certificate, winter 2027 is the more realistic target. A VPD is valid for one year from its date of issue, whichever semester you select, so documents you prepare now are not wasted if you switch.
A month-by-month plan, October 2026 to April 2027
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| October to November 2026 | Confirm which shortlisted programmes start in summer. Note each deadline and route. Check your dMAT status. Send APS documents if you have not. |
| December 2026 | If the dMAT applies to you, watch the APS India dMAT page and register as soon as registration opens. Prepare your uni-assist or direct application documents. |
| Mid-January 2027 | dMAT test, if required. Submit your applications in time for each deadline, aiming for eight weeks ahead with uni-assist. |
| After admission | Apply for the visa at once through the Consular Services Portal. Arrange proof of funds and health insurance. |
| April 2027 | The summer semester begins. DAAD India suggests arriving at least a week before your course starts. |
After admission: visa, money and insurance
German Missions in India say study visa applications go through the Consular Services Portal, and the link to book an on-site appointment comes only at the end of that process. The checklist asks for the admission letter, the APS certificate, proof of funds (a blocked account in Germany or a formal declaration of commitment) and health insurance from your intended date of arrival. Use the amount in the mission’s current checklist, and open the blocked account only after you have checked it.
Where it depends
Start dates, deadlines and document rules are set by each university and programme. The dMAT applies only to certain degree fields, and the list is being updated. Visa timing depends on your mission and the time of year. None of the sources gives fixed waiting times for APS or the visa.
What SGC does not decide
Universities decide admission, APS India and g.a.s.t. handle the APS certificate and the dMAT, and the German missions decide visas. SGC can help you check which programmes start in summer, order your documents and prepare application materials; see the Master’s Route page.
Your next step: open each programme page on your shortlist and write down whether it starts in summer 2027 and its deadline.

German authorities, universities and employers make every decision on visas, admissions, recognition and jobs. SGC explains the process and helps you prepare; it cannot promise an outcome.
